Relief printing

Relief print images are made by cutting out areas from the surface of wood or linoleum blocks, rolling ink onto the surface of the block and then placing a sheet of paper over the block and applying moderate pressure using a press. The “Letterpress” process dates back to the middle of the fifteenth century and was the most important development in the history of printing text. It consisted of inking letters cut in relief and then making the impression on paper.
