May 2008:
Northern Editions has delivered the last of four print workshops with East Kimberley artists from Waringarri Arts. Workshop manager Gertjan Forrer was once again joined by Dian Darmansjah (QLD) in collaborating with artists over nine days at their art centre in Kununurra, WA.
The much anticipated Waringarri boxed suite will be launched on 16 August during the NATSIA Award and Darwin Festival celebrations.
Northern Editions welcomes former CDU fourth-year honours intern Glynis Lee to the team in the position of editioning printer and studio coordinator.
February 2008:
New printmaker at Northern Editions
Northern Editions farewelled Manni Redlich last year after an extended ‘short-term’ 4-month stint in the print studio. Manni, along with Paul Satchell, greatly enthused staff and students alike with his knowledge and passion for printmaking. Manni’s generous and giving spirit inspired an informal ‘late-night printmakers club’ and attracted a dedicated group of students and artists, stimulating new and exciting works. Manni’s contribution was invaluable and he will be missed greatly.
As the New Year commenced, Northern Editions welcomed the much anticipated arrival of new workshop manager and master printer, Gertjan Forrer. Relocating himself and his family from the Netherlands, Gertjan brings with him 30 years of experience in all print media.
For the past six years Gertjan has worked part-time for the prestigious Rijksakademie in Amsterdam whilst simultaneously running his own professional print workshop in Weesp. Gertjan was literally born into printmaking, learning his craft from his father, the late Jan Forrer, who was highly-regarded master printer in Europe and worked with notable artists such as Marc Chagall, Alberto Giacometti and Oscar Kokoschka. Gertjan will work with Waringarri artists in February.
Former workshop manager, Dian Darmansjah, will also join us for the Waringarri workshop from Queensland where he has set up his own print studio, Firebox Print Studio.
October 2007:
Waringarri Artists Agnes Armstrong, Judy Mengil, Minnie Lumai and Phyllis Ningarmara worked with Paul Satchell, Manni Redlich, Jacinta Numina-Waugh and intern Glynis Lee to produce a series of new etchings. It follows the earlier successful workshop with fellow artists Alan and Peggy Griffiths in April and will culminate with other Waringarri artists to launch a new boxed suite of prints in 2008.
Paul and Manni also delivered a training workshop for artists working with Larrakia Nation Aboriginal Corporation. The artists created etching plates, learnt inking techniques and edition-printing skills in order to be self-sufficient in producing prints on new presses at their Darwin-based art centre.
After more than 3 months on temporary loan, Paul Satchell has sadly left his Northern Editions ‘family’ to relish the cooler climes of Victoria. We can not thank him enough for his infectious enthusiasm, passion and drive; all at CDU feel richer for having known him. We also thank the talented Kylie Blackley for her generous contribution and wish her well as she returns to Melbourne.
Northern Editions will celebrate the conclusion of another busy year with its annual Christmas sale and exhibition, Treasure in ink, which will run until 17 December.
May 2007:
Northern Editions fondly farewelled its international printmaking duo, Sarah Dudley and Ulrich Khüle who have left after nine months in Darwin to travel Australia and New Zealand before going to work with William Kentridge in South Africa. Their professionalism, passion and cheeky humour was greatly appreciated and the effects of their valuable contribution in the workshop will be long-lasting.
Artists Alan and Peggy Griffiths from Waringarri Arts travelled from Kununurra to create a number of new etchings at our Casuarina Campus studio. A familiar face returned briefly as former workshop manager Dian Darmansjah (now Firebox print studio, QLD) joined us for the week to work with Alan and Peggy.
On 31 May, Northern Editions gallery will launch 25 new etchings and lithographs by Marina Strocchi and Wayne Eager that have been co-published with the artists. In late June the gallery will exhibit the stunning printed work of Dorothy Napangardi in conjunction with Gallery Gondwana.
February 2007:
As 2007 commenced, Northern Editions reluctantly farewelled its workshop manager, Trent Walter, as he moves back to the cooler climes of Melbourne. Over the past 12 months Trent has been instrumental in the many successes enjoyed in the studio including projects such as the Jilamara collection of etchings, a print workshop conducted in remote Balgo WA, and the development of a fabulous body of new prints by Marina Strocchi and Wayne Eager. Trent’s leadership in the studio was characterised by his professionalism, commitment, patience, good humour and inspired taste in music! Everyone considered him a delight to work with and a good friend whom we are going to miss a great deal. We thank him for his valuable contribution and wish him all the very best.
Northern Editions is now calling for applications for the two positions of workshop manager and senior editioning printer. Please contact Emma on 08 8946 6325 for further information.
Fresh new work will be editioned in the coming months; both large and small plates by Balgo artists and etchings and lithographs by Alice Springs artists Marina Strocchi and Wayne Eager. The results will be exhibited mid-year in the Northern Editions gallery. CDU post-graduate student, Caroline Rannersberger, will exhibit a selection of her new smaller scale work in April 2007.
August 2006:
Northern Editions has warmly welcomed two new printmakers into its team. Sarah Dudley and Ulrich Kühle (Uli) have travelled from Germany to work with us in Darwin.
Approximately two years ago, Sarah and Uli contacted Northern Editions and since then countless emails have tracked the pair through Ireland, Germany and South Africa to their arrival in early July 2006. Touching down at the busiest time of year for the print studio, their presence has been eagerly anticipated; they have hit the ground running and are thriving in their new studio environment. Already there has been an important exchange of knowledge and excitement generated within the team as new ideas for projects are formed and discussed.
Their first visit to Australia, Sarah and Uli bring over 20 years of combined professional printmaking experience as master printmakers, printmaking instructors and artists in their own right. Both have undertaken the prestigious two year Master Printer Training Program at the world famous Tamarind Institute in New Mexico, USA. Sarah, born French Canadian, and Uli, born in Germany, call Ireland ‘home-base’, but they have recently traversed the world undertaking exciting printmaking projects. The pair have collaborated with artists in Botswana, South Africa, Germany, Ireland and the USA to produce limited edition prints. The opportunity to work with well-renowned Australian Indigenous artists has been a drawcard for Sarah and Uli to come to Northern Editions.
March 2006:
In January this year, Northern Editions farewelled its Workshop Manager of two years, Dian Darmansjah, whose presence and guidance will be greatly missed. Trained at Queensland University of Technology and the Tamarind Institute of Lithography (USA), Dian’s professionalism was instrumental in leading the workshop to produce the high quality prints for which the Studio is now renowned. His exceptional technical, creative and tutoring abilities were a highly-regarded asset at Charles Darwin University (CDU) where he also contributed to our Printmaking department as both technician and lecturer. An accomplished artist-printmaker in his own right, Dian returns to the cooler climes of Queensland to follow his own art practice. All at Northern Editions thank Dian for his fantastic contribution and wish him and his family the very best in their future endeavours.
Also in January, we warmly welcomed Trent Walter to the Northern Editions team. Trent recently hails from Melbourne where he studied printmaking at the Victorian College of the Arts and worked for three years at Port Jackson Press, most recently as their Workshop Manager. Trent has quickly settled into Northern Editions and embraced Territory life; he is keeping a wary eye on our local wildlife from the safety of his newly acquired four-wheel drive!
Northern Editions will open its first exhibition for 2006 during Orientation Week activities at CDU on Thursday 23 February. cross-section: a collection of prints form the stockroom will run until 7 April. The show is being co-curated by Anne Chivas (Gallery Manager, Northern Editions) and Anita Angel (Curator, CDU Art Collection) and will reflect on the long and continuing partnership between Northern Editions and the Art Collection. It promises to unearth many treasures from the rich printmaking history of Northern Editions.
