For the first time, artists from all three art centres in Tiwi Islands have worked exclusively in water-based Japanese-style woodcut prints, suisei moku hanga, and have collaborated with Northern Editions’ printmaker Jacqueline F Gribbin to achieve remarkable new work.
The Tiwi tradition of wood carving has translated seamlessly into this unique style of printmaking.
The resulting prints from Munupi Arts and Crafts, Tiwi Design and Jilamara Arts and Craft provides a fresh and exciting addition to an already impressive printmaking history on the Tiwi Islands which began in the 1960s.
Collaborator all images and printer: Jacqueline F Gribbin

Julie Nangala Robinson is one of five daughters born in Yuendumu in 1973 to well-known Telstra Award winning artist, Dorothy Napangardi. Since the late1990’s while often in the company of her talented mother, Julie has pursued and developed a creative visual language all of her own, one which consists of a fascinating blend of stylized experimentation and ancient narrative.
Using an aerial perspective along with either a distinctive monochromatic or colourful palette, Julie’s current paintings (which depict the topographical features of her traditional country at the site of Pirlinyanu) have become works of extraordinary optical brilliance as she alternates the size of dots throughout her work as well as building up specific shapes or reference points often by repeated overdotting.

Rusiate, one of the most exciting and provocative artists to exhibit at Gallery Gondwana, comes from a long lineage of potters, carvers, tapa cloth and fibre artists. Named Contemporary Fijian Artist of the Year in 1999, Rusiate’s work is a sensuous mix of past and present, myth and reality. He has had seven solo exhibitions and participated in many group exhibitions. To date much of his work has explored his personal experiences and his universal awareness of social issues. He handles these subjects with intelligence and sensitivity.
Living between Fiji and Australia, Rusiate is a multi-media artist, exploring film, music, dance, storytelling and writing.

When Miltjili was a young girl, her aunties would tell her stories about her country and the Jukurrpa or Dreaming stories associated with Mina Mina, a sacred site for Napanangka’s and Napangardi’s.
Mitjili is a traditional woman, who spends much time in Alice Springs these days, but always looks forward to her regular bush trips with family, to hunt for goanna, echidna and other bush delicacies.
Mitjili paints mythological narrative relating to her country and often will depict narrative through multiple layers in the one painting. She uses an aerial perspective and highlights important sites with a painterly but also spontaneous technique.

Rammey lived in Warlawoon country walking in the bush with his family when very young then moved to
Bedford Downs and worked there as a young man. He spent some time working at Landsdowne Station.
He then moved to Bow River Station and has lived there ever since.
He began painting for Jirrawun Arts in 2000. In October 2000 his paintings were included in the
exhibition Gaagembi - Poor Things along with paintings by Hector Jandany, Timmy Timms, and Paddy
Bedford at William Mora Galleries in Melbourne. The title of this show is a word used as a term of
endearment, sympathy and sorrow. It is the way lots of people feel about the country that is currently
occupied, their predecessors who walked in it freely, and the way of life that is gone.
Rammey was a key figure in the production of the Bedford Downs massacre Joonba that was staged at
the 2000 Telstra Art Award in Darwin. He is an inspired dancer who helped train to train the young boys
in dancing. He and Rusty Peters made the dance poles used in the Darwin Joonba. He was also an
actor and dancer with the Neminuwarlin Performance Group in its production of Fire, Fire Burning Bright
which premiered at the Perth International Festival of the Arts in February 2002 and opened the
Melbourne International Festival of the Arts at the State Theatre of Victoria from 17 - 20 October 2002.
Rammey is true to his law, painting only country that he has rights to through birth and family. Most of
his paintings are of the gorge country north-west of Halls Creek in an area surrounding Elgee Cliffs.
