Kakadu mulil bim is an exhibition of works generated from two CDU printmaking workshops in 2006. It represents a community group of Kakadu based art practitioners ranging from young emerging artists to experienced and more established artists. The diversity of works is testament to the unique, first efforts by a united group of independent artists from the Kakadu region.
The Kakadu community of artists has a strong history of art practice and cultural knowledge. The group as a collective began to work together on this project with the assistance of ‘Kakadu Community Development’, whose aim it was to provide artists with opportunities to develop greater independence in their art production and further their professional development, particularly in the area of art as business enterprise, and more recently, through printmaking with Charles Darwin University. The project has also received the generous support of Energy Resources Australia.
CDU Printmaking Workshop I was held at Murdudjurl, March 2006, with over 20 participants, delivered by CDU Darwin with Master Printmaker Leon Stainer. The artists are enrolled in the VET Certificate III in Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Cultural Arts. Workshop II was held at CDU, Darwin, December 2006. The group was divided into two, with the December workshop representing half the original group. The other participants will also have the opportunity to join a further workshop at CDU in 2007.
This is the first exhibition of such a comprehensive group of artists from the Kakadu region specifically focussed on limited edition prints. It is also the first time the artists have all come together since the printmaking workshops in 2006. The exhibition represents an ongoing process of collaboration between the artists and Charles Darwin University, and as such, represents a selection of trial proofs developed during the workshops. Whilst all care is taken to ensure accurate details of the works, there may be some minor discrepancies due to the finalisation of discussions between the artists as part of the ongoing collaborative process.
