Alcaston Gallery is thrilled to present new two-dimensional and three-dimensional print works by renowned Tiwi artist, the late JEAN BAPTISTE APUATIMI (c. 1940 – 2013) and her daughter, emerging artist MARIA JOSETTE ORSTO.

Jean Baptiste Apuatimi was one of the most senior and accomplished artists on the Tiwi Islands. She succeeded in passing down her artistic talents to daughter Maria Josette Orsto, who was greatly influenced by her mother’s work. During the Darwin Festival in 2012 they participated in a print workshop at Northern Editions Printmaking Studio and Gallery at Charles Darwin University in Darwin, Northern Territory. The artists utilised different printmaking techniques to produce these prints, and for the first time, Jean Baptiste succeeded in creating magnificent three-dimensional prints in the form of traditional Tiwi tunga bags.
